Converse Collective

Design Brief

For this project, I was asked to choose a topic of my choice to use for an 8 page zine that also doubles as an 11 x 17 poster. With ample research to fuel my designs, type and image were the driving factors of the project. I was also tasked with learning how to fold and cut the zines to distribute to my audience.

Process

The goal for this zine is to teach people about the influential history of a shoe that over 60 percent of Americans have or used to have in their lifetime. The target demographic of this zine would be young adults from the ages of 17-26, while anyone regardless of age, who is a fan of the staple sneaker would be able to pick up a copy and be invested. To do this I sourced images of the converse sneaker throughout time and within different settings (fashion, film, sports, and music). I then altered each photo with the same green halftone filter to make them cohesive and dynamic within the pages of my zine.

Converse History

Launched in 1908 by Marquis Mills, originally called Converse Rubber Shoe Company, the timeless brand specialized in making rubber soled shoes for men, women, and children. By 1910 the company was producing shoes daily, while by 1915 they began to set their focus on athletic shoes. Converse’s Chuck Taylor All Star sneaker was first brought to fruition in 1921 after its namesake complained about having sore feet to a sales office in Chicago, inspiring the first sneaker made specifically for basketball. Chuck’s however were not initially named after Chuck Taylor, with the original title just bearing the All Star title. During the 1920’s, Taylor traveled across the country promoting and selling the sneaker, creating a huge success for the company which led to the shoes being renamed after him alongside the addition of his signature on the logo. By the 1930’s, Converse’s Chuck Taylor All Stars were worn by basketball players throughout the United States due to Taylor’s influence. Having been focused on the basketball market for over 30 years, Chuck’s began to make a cultural shift, becoming prevalent in the music scene of the 80s and 90s. Converse were and still are worn by some of the biggest MCs and rockstars in the world, including the likes of the Rolling Stones, The Ramones, Snoop Dog, Rhianna, Nirvana’s Curt Kobain and many others. Chuck Taylor All Star’s eternal design has represented and been at the forefront of endless style trends and became adapted by many different subcultures throughout its history. The sneaker has managed to maintain its high appeal for over 100 years and continues to be influential unlike any other sneaker.
